It's Personal

PRONUNCIATION AND PURPOSE

You may be wondering how to pronounce “Canh” and why I moved from psychiatry to coaching.  The “nh” at the end of a word in Vietnamese is pronounced “ng,” so Canh is phonetically “Kang.”  Learning and adjusting to this pronunciation can be a barrier for some.  Please ask me how to say my name as many times as you need—I’ll only appreciate your consideration.

Having practiced psychiatry for 20 years, I coach now because I value its positive and forward-focused approach.  I went into psychiatry because I wanted to help people live better and happier lives by having conversations with them in which they learned to adopt more helpful perspectives on themselves and their situations.  The same is true for coaching, and I'm incredibly excited to amplify what I set out to do in 2000.

Privilege and Prejudice

YOU TAKE THE GOOD, YOU TAKE THE BAD

I have enjoyed the privileges of being a smart, cisgender male with the opportunities for an Ivy League education, medical training and positions of leadership and authority.  Yet I also grew up experiencing prejudice, both as a Vietnamese immigrant in an almost exclusively white bedroom community outside Austin and as a gay boy deep in the heart of the Southern Baptist body of Christ.  While I haven’t lived the experiences of a woman or trans person, I do know what it’s like to straddle belonging and exclusion and to struggle with self-acceptance amidst accomplishment.

Proven Leadership

TRANSLATABLE EXPERIENCE

As a physician who has held leadership positions and management responsibilities for over a decade, I have led teams of physicians and nurse practitioners and worked with leaders in other disciplines (nursing, social work, etc.).  Within the larger organization, I have worked alongside department chiefs and C-suite officers.  I have coached colleagues from a range of settings, from clinical and administrative to leadership and frontline.  I have also counseled fellow physicians on managing their interactions with peers and patients.  I have found that these experiences translate readily as I coach clients in other fields.
